Does anyone know if Beagles or Hound type dogs have skin problems?

My dog is half beagle and half hound(don't know what kind of hound) and he itches a lot. He gets regular baths, flea medication and I put oil on his food. He did have a skin rash as a puppy but there is no indication that it is back. I have checked him daily and there is no rash and he does not have fleas. I am taking him to the vet, but thought I would try on here too. Thank you

Does anyone know if Beagles or Hound type dogs have skin problems?
The short answer to your question is yes. All dog breeds are susceptible to skin problems, but some breeds more than others. Labs for example are notorious for their bad skin issues and is hereditary. If you have ruled out fleas and hygiene, it is most likely an environmental or food allergy. Grass is a very common allergen. So is food. My chocolate lab is allergic to grass--if she rolls in it, she breaks out in hive-type boils all over her stomach. She is also allergic to corn and wheat, which makes her even worse and incredibly stinky. So, I took her to our vet and they recommended taking her to our University's veterinary lab and have a detailed allergy test done. There they took her blood and tested her for every possible allergy under the sun. She is now on a duck and potato diet ($40 per bag!) but her allergies are contained and she is much happier. Be prepared for the vet to want to run an allergy test. The first thing they do is start off by eliminating certain things it could be and if he gets better, then you simply continue that regimen.

On a similar note for your dog, my friend has a beagle and they discovered he was allergic to rye grass and had an allergy to corn. The rye grass is sort of unavoidable since her husband is a grass seed farmer! But since she has limited the time he spends on the grass, he has been better in addition to the special food he is on.

Best of luck to you and I hope you discover what is wrong!
Reply:no, not usually skin problems. BUT Beagles tend to get ear infections.. especially in hot weather. That will cause them to scratch alot... the vet can just give you drops for the ears. That is common for them
Reply:The beagle is not known for having skin problems, but all dogs can suffer from skin issues.

It is possible that your dog has a food allergy - these can show up as itchy skin. I would discuss this with your vet.
Reply:u could be bathing to much or it could be the shampoo. hounds have a differ coat and skin type, they have lots of oils it is why hounds smell a bit. try getting a hound slicker brush and using there oatmeal baby shampoo, or one that is for hounds.

also it could be his food if it has wheat or corn as the first thing then these can cause coat problems. meat sound be first. not a grain.

hope that helps
Reply:What are you feeding? If it is a grocery store brand and contains corn and/or wheat, a change of diet is in order. I'd suggest Canidae or Wellness. You might try a fish oil supplement that supplies Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids as well.

Too many baths can dry out the skin. Always use dog shampoo, preferably with oatmeal or tea tree oil for dogs with sensitive skin.
Reply:My dog use to do the same thing until I switched him to a holistic dog food it has no preservatives, food colors or sugars. Also check for worms some times they itch.
Reply:maybe you give him too many baths? try changing with you use to bath him with....that may be whatever... beagles are not subjected to skin conditions any more then any other short haired dog though. now that doesn't mean that he doesn't have a skin condition but just know that. i would actually bathe him less. and if you try changing what you use to give him a bath make sure you're picking a product with different ingrediants rather then just changing brands. for example a shampoo for dogs with sensative skin.etc. but like i said i would honestly bathe less
