My dog is having skin problems?

I have a 4 year old schipperkee and as the weather gets warmer he bites and licks at his paws and legs. I did take him to vet once and they gave him a medication, didnt help. he is missing some hair is these areas. Does anyone have any ideas?

My dog is having skin problems?

Reply:Sounds like hot spots..or a food allergy...I just found out that my dog has a corn allergy...so I can't feed her anything with corn in it...I started feeding her Nutro dog food..she seems to be doing better...try using some witch hazel on your dog...it might sooth him some.
Reply:It could be allergies. Dogs sometimes lick their paws when they have allergies. Check with your vet about the dosage before trying this, but sometimes giving them Benadryl will help.
Reply:Whenever dogs lick and bite at thier paws it is almost certain that they have some kind of allergy. Most likely from the food you are feeding them. Try changing his food to a type of lamb and rice diet, or an organic brand, it may be more expensive, and also you can buy Flax Seed oil which helps keep thier coat and skin in good condition. You can buy that at a health food store usually. Put about a teaspoon or so into his food each day. :) My dog had the same problem and if you don't do anything about it, it will only get worse! My dog had little bald patches in her fur, but now that we changed her food and use flax seed oil she looks great :)
Reply:Change his food to something that has no corn or wheat. Canidae is good. Wheat allergy usually shows up as hotspots on the paws and legs and butt. Hot weather only makes it worse as the skin is irritated more with dry grass and leaves and flies or gnats landing on it.

Also, add a little flaxseed oil to his diet every other day.

If possible, try this before having steroid injections. It usually takes a few weeks to see good results, as it takes time to get it out of the system. Also, check the treat labels for wheat as well.

Then take him BACK to the vet! This really bugs me when people do this - vets aren't miracle workers, they can't always get it right first time! Or go to another vet if you don't like the first one. Fact is, skin problems can be immensely tricky to diagnose.

If the vets don't hear from you, they're going to assume the dog is cured aren't they? One thing's for sure, no one on here can diagnose - not professionals and haven't examined the dog.
