My dog has recently been prescribed Atopica for a skin problem.?

I find that about an hour after taking his tablet, he is practically bouncing off the walls. Is this normal ?

This isn't a normal side effect, consult your vet.

Another option instead of drugs, is to change his food to one that does not contain corn, wheat, gluten and soy, no by-products, no BHA and BHT preservatives. The food you will need costs more, but you will be feeding less because of the digestibility and no fillers. You will probably see a dramatic change for the better feeding a better food! I'm assuming you tried the diphenhydramine already to help with itching? You can also use fatty acid supplements that can be a big help, also. Good luck.
Reply:As with all drugs, side effects may occur. In a field study, the most common side effects were gastrointestinal signs. Gingival hyperplasia and papillomas may also occur during the initial dosing phase. ATOPICA is not for use in reproducing dogs or dogs with a history of malignant neoplasia.
Reply:contraindications amongst others are increasing the levels of glucose (a sugar that the body uses as an energy source) hens the possibility of his 'bounciness' afterwards. is it possible that you dog is diabetic? may i suggest that you contact your vet and talk to him/her of your concernes, good luck let us know how you get on.

ps hope your dogs atopic dermatitis gets better soon!!pps dont use diphenhydramine its an antihistamine you need a ciclosporin(anti fungal, anti inflammatory anti puritic)
Reply:My dog has been on Atopica for Anal Furunculosis (like Crohn's...the spelling may be wrong On the AF) for 5 months. He has suffered a small amount of vomitting....but bouncing off of the walls is not something he either suffers with or has been noted as a side effect. I would suggest you get this checked with your vet...........Expensive eh? Costing us 530.00 quid a month! But then again, ours weighs 50k
