Weird skin and hair problems with my dog?!?

I have two boxers, a boy and a girl. The girl's hair started to fall off last year in the summer. We took her to the doctor and they said its common in boxers and its because she doesnt go out enough and she needs more sun. They also said to buy her a UV light. so we did its not working. I wanna know what it is and why its happening. What can i do? I think its starting with my other dog.

Weird skin and hair problems with my dog?!?
Probably some kind of disease, try for some other doctor's opinion. Don't tell the new doctor what the old doctor said. That way he tells you his own opinion from what he sees.
Reply:Diet and allergies are my guess... ask your vet to test her for allergens.
Reply:Maybe a thyroid problem? Sounds like you need to take your dog to a different vet for a second opinion.
Reply:well..how many times do you shower ur dog?

it;s onlu recommended to shower your dog atleast 2 times a month.

If you shower your dog more than 2 or 3 times a month..it can cause dry skin, skin irritation and hair lose.
Reply:What kind of food are you feeding it? How old are they? Put a couple of details in. Also it might be a skin disease b/c my friend has a boxer who had the same problem and it turned out to be a skin disease. He gave her medication and this cream from the vet and it went away for the most part
Reply:It does sound a lot like allergies...maybe dry skin also. My dog suffers from these ailments and she has to use special shampoos and supplements to take care of her skin.

go to this it is very general so u will prbably find out what is wrong but yeah this is where i found out why my dogs hair was falling out ( he was allergic to rubber ) but yah i hope everything is good =)
Reply:i had the same problem with my husky dog.this thing happends to dogs when you give them pork bones or pork meat.they seem to have a sensibility with that more over they're dehydrated \.You should give them a good bath with a special shampoo.for skin problems, some vitamins and if they don't drink enough water you should tell the doctor to give them a shot for dehydration.
Reply:i have 3 labs...the same thing happened to one of them. The vet said it was just allergies. it was only bad at times. sometimes it would get worse and kinda scary looking but he said it was nothing to worry about. his hair would fall out in clumps while petting him-i thought he had cancer or something. i wouldnt really worry about it. they gave him antibiotics and it cleared up- then eventually came back-no big deal. then they tried to change his diet-that seemed to work and he didnt loose as much hair as he did. .....and he has longer hair than a boxer-so it was scary to pet him and see what fell out.
Reply:i wouldn't worry my dog has the same but she isn't a boxer its a more serious Esma they loses hair and there skin goes very dry my dog had it on her chin and on her paws and now on her belly if you go to a different vet and say that you have been told that is that they should give you some special cream and some anti- biotic i cleared it up for my dog i mostly happens in the summer not so much in the winter
Reply:Unfortunately hair loss can be attributed to many things.

You may want to investigate feeding a higher quality food.

Keep up with the UV light as suggested by your vet (you don't mention how long you've been trying this, but often it will take several weeks to months for results to show).

Look into and test for possible allergies, fleas, mange, etc. Often dogs can be allergic to grass, dust mites or other very common things around the house. "Seasonal flank alopecia" might be something to look into.

The boxer breed seems especially prone to Hypothyroidism. A blood test can determine if your dog has it. More info at: http://americanboxerclub.org/purina3.htm... I'd really recommend this, if you haven't done so already.
