It sounds like mange which is inherited and almost impossible to cure. Take him to a vet.
Reply:He's getting to old.
Reply:It's probably mange. He should go to the Vet. It can't be completely cured, but they can give the dog meds so it makes it bearable for the dog to live with.
Reply:try putting a little olive oil in it food. could only be dry skin.
Reply:It sounds like Mange - He needs to see a vet.

In the meantime, use Bag Balm on the sores to sooth them - You can get it at petsmart (It's a medicated salve originally formulated for Cows Utters).
Reply:sounds like allergies. my dog has the same thing.
Reply:She has some long term allergy issues that need to be addressed, mange is unlikely in a dog her age and it does not turn the skin black. She probably needs a vet visit for antibiotics, special shampoo and maybe some cortisone and a discussion about allergies and what you need to look for in the future. You did a nice thing by adopting an older dog!
Reply:there IS a way to make it better at home with home remedies at http://earthclinic.com ....do some research on that website and read the recipes and the testimonials and look at the before and after pics of dogs that have used these remedies!!!! It works!!! I tried recipe #1 and my dog is soooooo much better!!!
