Our dog has dry flaky skin under her coat - products that could help?

We have a 7 year old female Estrela Mountain dog mix who we adopted 8 months ago and we've recently noticed she's been scratching a lot and when you part her fur her skin is very dry and flaky. Has anyone else had this problem with their dog and were their any products you used that worked well? Thanks!

The best thing I've ever given my dogs is a salmon oil capsule every day. If you don't have that, give her about 1 tablespoon of veg. oil on her food daily. You'll see a huge change in skin and coat in about 2 - 3 weeks. You also need to make sure you're not bathing too often, especially in the winter because that makes the problem much worse.
Reply:umm head and shoulders dandreft shampoo? lmao no just kidding umm try asking the vet for what kind of shampoo would be good and give good resaltes :)
Reply:i use natural/organic shampoos and conditionsers on my dog that contain Aloe Vera,Olive oil, and other moisturizing compounds

Those products at the store for dogs that are expenise are bull ****. Next time you bath your dog you could also smooth some shea butter or again Aloe Vera lotion on your dog and massage it after shampooing and rinse then condition.

Also add some fatty acids to your dogs diet. Or sometimes i mix a teaspoon of olive oil in either dry or mushy food. They dont seem to notice it. That can help work from the inside out
Reply:go to your local pet store and buy an oatmeal based shampoo
Reply:Try a doggie shampoo with oatmeal (something designed to moisturize). A leave in conditioner designed especially for dogs might really helped (my Schipperke had flaky skin, and this helped a lot). You also might try adding a skin and coat supplement to her food. If you aren't already, a change in her diet to a premium, holistic kibble might fix the problem completely.

You also might try taking her to the vet to rule out mange, allergies, or other skin conditions.

Hope this helps...
Reply:Sulfodene brand medicated shampoo for dogs. Available in many pet shops, Wal-Marts, etc. Check out the makers website at www.farnampet.com
Reply:You can put vegetable oil in her food. You can also use a regular human dandruff shampoo dilluted with water.
Reply:Dogs have the same problems in the winter as people do: Itchy, dry skin. Simple tricks: 1. Give her a bath with lukewarm water to remove the dead skin build up. Make sure she's really really dry before you let her outside again tho! You can add some oil to her food (mineral oil is good, it has no flavour), just a teaspoon or so to dinner. Also use a humidifyer in the room where she spends most of her time. If the problem persists, take her to the vet to have her checked, especially if you notice she's losing a lot of hair or developing bald spots. There could be a problem you don't know about -- she could have an allergy, skin infection, fleas, or even mange.
Reply:add some egg to her diet and also make sure you are brushing her daily and not overbathing her..... make sure she doesn't have fleas either - you can also buy oil supplements at the pet store that are supposed to be good for coat...... TRY FEEDING TIMBERWOLF or CANIDAE dog food,,,, you'll have to search the web for distributors near you..
