We need more information to help you. Best bet is to take the dog to a vet - there are lots of potential skin problems in dogs. Food allergies can be common but it depends on the problem you're having.
Reply:I don't know what skin problem your dog has, as I did not see your original question and you did not say in this one.

There are many skin disorders and diseases a dog can contract. From Mange to dry skin. Your best bet would be to take your dog to a veterinarian to have it diagnosed properly. Then you would have the proper treatment for the disorder.

I know veterinarians can be expensive, but it will be worth it in the long run.
Reply:I have a little Japenese Chin and he used to drive me crazy with his scratching, also his ears would get infected and the "flap" area really dry. I have trpouble getting him to eat good dog food (of course he wants people food) and found that certain types of the dog "gravy" with vitamins works great to pour over his meal or esp. the omegha oils/fish oils for dogs that I actually found in Walmart- that made a HUGE diff. in his coat, itching and I put bb oil inside his ear. Of course the vet had to help me with the infection ($$$) but the prevention I found has helped tons! Good luck!
Reply:Skin problems are very common in dogs for many reasons, but the most common are allergies. Most common causes here are food, fleas, and substances in their environment. Many dog foods are the cause of skin problems due to the fact that they have corn and fillers in the main ingredients. These (like corn) aren't usable by the body anyway and cause allergic problems. My fist recommendation (if you dog dfoesn't have an obvious flea problem) is to change to a better grade food. This is not most department store foods. They are heated or cooked and loose the vitamins and minerals anyway. Read the ingredients, don't choose anything that has fillers or corn in the first three ingredients. First ingredient (and usually second/third) should be a good source of protien like Chicken, turkey, lamb etc. Not meal or by-products. That usually reduces the skin problems then if you add back in the essential oils and minerals that they need for healthy skin and coat, you should see great improvement. We have had two dogs with skin problems and "hot spots". After we changed their food and supplemented their oils, we had NO more problems (as long as we didn't revert back to what we were doing before). Any pet store or vet web-site will carry skin and coat supplements (they they don't cost an arm and a leg). The best that we have found also reduces non-seasonal shedding. You can get it at Drs foster and smith or petsmart, etc. It is called SHED-STOP and has a great mix of vitamins, minerals, and essential oils. Works fast too. Worked for skin itching and hair loss in just days and their coats are very shiny and smooth. Oils are very important in skin conditions. Rememer to change food gradually by mixing old and new food and increasing amounts of new food until totally changed. (couple/few days) that way they don't get stomach upset and loose bowels. Fleas of course are easily fixed with meds, and the substances can be things like ....powder carpet fresheners, strong cleaning solutions leaving a resiude on floors, harsh dog shampoos or even over bathing. Good luck with this, it can be fixed you just need the right combo.
