Something is wrong with my dog! He is always scratching the same place on his leg constantly! He's a pekinese (sp?) and at first i thought he had fleas, so I gave him a nice long bath, but he's still scratching! I even used the sensitve skin shampoo! I've done everything I can think of! And I just don't have the money to take him to the vet!! HELP!!!

My dog has skin problems!?
First, if he does have fleas, a regular bath will do nothing. You must use a flea shampoo.

That being said, it could several things. Fleas, mange, allergies, dry skin.

I would start with giving him a flea bath and changing his food. Those are the two most common skin problems. If nothing helps, you'll have to bite the bullet and take him to the vet.
Reply:It's probably a hot spot.

Supposedly, it's a bacterial infection, or nerve damage, or...something like that.

Get some of that hot spot treatment at, say, a -mart store or a pet store...get one that says it's an analgesic or has topical anesthetic.

If that doesn't work, it may be something more serious, but try it for a few days and see if it helps. Hot spots tend to come and go. Personally, I took my dog to the vet for hers...and I got some nasty stuff that smells like bad garlic.

The sh!t didn't work. Nothing really worked.

It finally went away on its own--I mean, I felt bad that she had it, but I tried OTC stuff and prescription stuff, and all that really helped was time.

And try to keep your pooch occupied--scratching only makes it worse.
Reply:Your doggie has a skin allergy. Does he lick the area too?.......Unfortunately he does require a visit to the doggie doc. This is very common in dogs, and usually requires a topical salv (like BP or something of the like)..... Try bathing him in an oatmeal bath (as this sooths the skin) and talk to your vet about payment options, seeing that you are short on cash. I worked at an animal hosp. for years, and we worked with many people who had money issues, and were able to work out a payment plan.

Good Luck
Reply:My husky had horribly itchy skin and I tried everything. After several vet visits, it ended up that he was allergic to chicken and I had to switch him to a lamb based diet. It may be a food allergy or sensitivity that is causing the rash.
